The 2009 Mitsubishi lancer can’t be considered a typical economy car like a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic because it lacks the refinements, reputation and fuel economy to match up with these cars.

However, its aggressive styling, above-average handling and high-tech features make it a fine option. It has some high-tech features that were reserved for luxury automobiles until recently. This Mitsubishi is worth a look for those who are looking for a car that is a reasonable alternative to the small sedan status quo.

The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer is available in DE, ES and GTS trim levels. The base DE features a tilt-only steering wheel, 16-inch steel wheels, a four-speaker CD/MP3 stereo, a trip computer and power windows and mirrors.

Keyless entry to the DE, power door locks, air-conditioning and antilock brakes are some other features. In the Lancer ES, there are 16-inch alloy wheels, a 60/40-split rear seat with center armrest and steering-wheel audio controls.

In the ES Sport Package, there is a large rear wing, chrome exhaust, a minor body kit and leather-wrapped steering wheel. So far top-level GTS is concerned, aside from these items, it has a more power-engine, a sport-tuned suspension, a leather-wrapped shifter, 18-inch alloy wheels, sport bucket front seats with upgraded fabric, a six-speaker stereo and Bluetooth.

In the ES and GTS Sun & Sound Package, keyless entry, a nine-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system with an in-dash six-CD changer, a sunroof, satellite radio and auxiliary audio jack have been included. With this package, the GTS can also get a navigation system with a 30GB hard drive to store digital music files.

A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has been housed in the Mitsubishi Lancer DE and ES. The engine can produce 152 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque. This engine has been classified as a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle with a downgraded 143 hp and 143-lb-ft of torque. For Lancer GTS, there is a new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that can produce 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. There is a standard five-speed manual transmission in both these engines and it is optional to have a continuously variable automatic transmission.

So far safety is concerned, the Mitsubishi Lancer will be available with a complete variety of airbags that include front-seat side airbags, a driver’s knee airbag and full-length curtain airbags. In ES and GTS model, antilock brakes are standard, while on the base DE they are optional. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard with the ES and GTS models and there are rear drums in the DE. There is no offering of stability control.

The Lancer interior is not quite praiseworthy, the used material falls on the cheap side so far materials quality is concerned. For taller drivers, the driving position is also poor, as there is no telescoping steering wheel and slight under-thigh support. The touch screen navigation system doesn’t feel impressive. In terms of features, it is well-equipped, but there is a lack of volume and tuning knobs.
